The Beginning of GIUNGISCIO®

GIUNGISCIO® began with a simple question: Could a surfboard become a vessel for Japanese culture?
This first note tells the story behind the beginning of that journey.
The surfboard I was riding before the idea of GIUNGISCIO® was born.

The Beginning

This is my first note.

Instead of introducing myself, I would like to tell you why I decided to make a surfboard like this.

I studied fashion design and garment making on the Sunshine Coast in Australia. After that, I travelled through several countries in Europe before returning to Japan, hoping to find a job in the fashion industry.

Unfortunately, things did not go as I had hoped. I did not have many connections, and the industry was changing. More and more production was moving overseas, and it became difficult to find the kind of work I was looking for.

During those uncertain days, I kept asking myself one question:

"How can I use the design and making skills that I worked so hard to learn?"

One day, something unexpected came back to my mind.

I remembered the children sailing small dinghies near the river mouth on the Sunshine Coast. They looked so happy that the memory had stayed with me.

I began learning about dinghies and even thought about building one myself.

However, I soon realised that I would need to build several prototypes and buy many expensive tools. It was simply beyond my budget.

So I looked for another project that was connected to the water but much simpler to build.

That was when I thought of a surfboard.

It seemed like something I could design and build with the resources I had.

And that is how my journey into surfboard making began.

Of course, at that time, I had never built a surfboard before.

That was the true beginning of the journey that would eventually become GIUNGISCIO®.
